The days after the election turned violent in Lusaka's Kabulonga area, where a security operation on a property left former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya dead. Police said he was fatally wounded by law enforcement officers during what officials described as an exchange of fire.
Government said eleven people were held in the operation, described as a raid on a suspected militia, and opposition figures confirmed that Tonse Alliance leader Brian Mundubile was among those found at the scene. Police later summoned Mundubile for questioning.
The opposition has contested the official account, describing the operation as a raid on its officials days after a disputed election. The Tonse Alliance had claimed victory during the count, which the ECZ suspended before completing the declaration — a sequence that poisoned the atmosphere in which the operation took place.
