Winning, it turns out, was not enough. Zambia have slipped one place to 91st in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, released on Wednesday 7 October, despite beating Togo 2-0 in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers during the window.
The Chipolopolo's tally now stands at 1,260.61 points. News Diggers reports that the victory over Togo earned a ten-point increment, leaving the total a marginal five points above where it stood before the window's two fixtures — against Algeria and Togo — but that the gain was insufficient to preserve 90th place as other nations made more significant strides.
The continental ladder
The African pecking order is unchanged at the summit. Morocco continue to lead the continent and sit seventh globally with 1,805.34 points, followed by Senegal in 18th and Egypt in 25th. Zambia remain outside Africa's top ten, and the gap to the continent's leading pack is measured in hundreds of points.
Rankings mathematics are unforgiving in the middle of the table. A victory over a lower-rated opponent brings modest points, and a single place can turn on results played continents away; Zambia's window was profitable in points and still cost a rung.
The slip is a footnote rather than a crisis — World Cup and AFCON qualifying campaigns are settled on the pitch, not the rankings board, and seedings turn on sustained runs rather than single windows. But the October release is a reminder of how thin the margin for standing still has become: win, and you might still fall.
The next international window offers the next chance to convert points back into places — and the fixtures that matter most for the ranking are precisely the ones that matter most for the qualifying campaign.
