Bronze for the juniors, a three-peat for Amajita: Zambia leave Maputo with a medal as South Africa take the crown again

The consolation match turned out to be no consolation for Namibia. Zambia's Junior Chipolopolo closed their COSAFA U20 campaign on Sunday morning with a 3-0 win over the Young Warriors at ABB Stadium — Gift Mumbi breaking the deadlock three minutes before half-time, Sipho Muntanga doubling it just after the hour and completing his brace in the first minute of added time. Bronze, then: a medal won the morning after the one that mattered got away.

The afternoon belonged to the champions. South Africa retained the regional title — and made it three consecutive COSAFA U20 crowns — with a 2-1 win over hosts Mozambique in the final. Oarabile Booysen's long-range strike in the 28th minute was answered within two minutes by Martinho Comecar, but Steven Mendes converted a 58th-minute penalty, his sixth goal of the tournament, to settle it. Amajita finished with five wins from five, thirteen goals scored and three conceded; Mozambique, beaten finalists on home soil, at least had the consolation of the day's bigger prize — both finalists had already booked the region's two places at the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

The individual awards told the tournament's story. Mendes, the Kaizer Chiefs forward who scored twice from the spot in the 4-2 semi-final that ended Zambia's run on Friday, took the Golden Boot with six goals. Mozambique's Alírio Cuna, on five, was named Player of the Tournament; South Africa's Takalani Mazhamba took the Golden Glove; Namibia collected the Fair Play award after a week that began with three clean sheets and ended with two 3-0 defeats. Zambia's Billy Daka finished among the two-goal scorers — one of three Junior Chipolopolo players, with Muntanga and Daniel Silubonde, on that list.

The ledger for Zambia reads better than the exit feels: a perfect group stage, a semi-final level at 2-2 with fourteen minutes to play before a red card and two penalties turned it, and a bronze match won without reply. Four wins from five against the region's best, the only loss to the champions. What it does not include is the one thing Friday was for — a place in Ghana. The U20s come home with medals around their necks and a question for the federation: a generation this close, twice in two years against South Africa, is doing something right. The next audit is whether the pathway above them can keep them.
