The kwacha spent Wednesday hovering just either side of 19.5 to the US dollar — 19.47 on Trading Economics' board, 19.57 on xe.com's late feed, and quoted by FNB at 19.45 buying and 19.83 selling — capping a month in which the currency has eased about 2.3 percent. Context matters: the kwacha was above 28 to the dollar as recently as March 2025, and remains one of the year's stronger emerging-market currencies.

Prices, meanwhile, are behaving. August inflation came in at 6.2 percent, down from 6.5 percent in July and the lowest reading since February 2018, comfortably inside the Bank of Zambia's 6–8 percent target band. Food inflation eased to 6.0 percent against 6.6 percent for non-food items; a 25kg bag of breakfast mealie meal averaged K243.96, down 3.24 percent on the month, with roller meal and maize grain also cheaper.

Now the calendar tightens. The Zambia Statistics Agency publishes the September inflation print on the last Thursday of the month — today. The Monetary Policy Committee's next decision lands at the end of the month, with the policy rate at 13.25 percent since May after three consecutive cuts. And the fuel-tax moratorium that has helped hold pump prices steady — petrol at K25.29 and diesel at K26.86 through September, per the Energy Regulation Board — expires on 30 September, days before the ERB's next monthly review.

Each prop of the disinflation story — a firm currency, a record harvest, fuel-tax relief — is a policy choice or a weather event, not a law of nature. The Bank of Zambia's own projections see inflation averaging 6.8 percent this year and 6.1 percent in 2027, on assumptions of exchange-rate stability and lower maize prices. This week's three prints will say whether those assumptions are holding.

What to watch: whether ZamStats' September print stays inside the band; whether the MPC holds at 13.25 percent or reaches for a fourth cut; and whether the Treasury extends the fuel-tax moratorium or lets the October pump price carry the full tax structure.
