The country's biggest music night has its contenders. The Kwacha Music Awards organising committee has announced the 2026 nominees and declared voting officially open, locking in Friday, 27 November 2026, for the ceremony itself — the industry's eighth annual reckoning, themed this year "Prestige, Excellence and Honour".

The list's provenance is the awards' founding argument: not a jury room, but the airwaves. Nominees are shaped by airplay tracking across a network of 45 radio stations nationwide, a system the committee says lets the public's actual listening habits write the voting lists. Executive President and Chairman Davies Kabuswe has been emphatic about the process's integrity: "Nominations are being handled professionally by 45 selected radio stations, according to strict guidelines, and no payment is required. Artists should beware of scammers who might demand payment in exchange for a nomination." Two executive members of the Zambia Association of Musicians have been added to the committee to keep artists' interests inside the room.

The early lists give the season its arguments. The Best Artist (Female) category alone stacks Bombshell Grenade, Mampi, Medoreen Besa, Rockstone, Sampa The Great, Tianna, Towela Kaira and Xaven against one another — a field spanning three eras of Zambian music — while Song of the Year and the provincial categories are already filling fan forums with predictions. Voting runs through the awards' official website and USSD channels.

The Culture Desk's reading: in a year when the industry has spent as much time on festival economics and political playlists as on the music itself, an airplay-driven list is a useful mirror — it rewards what the country actually heard, not what the industry wished it had heard. November 27 will show whether the mirror flattered anyone.
