The jacarandas have done their part; the weekend is left to the organisers. Saturday, 3 October is the busiest single day on Lusaka's cultural calendar this year, and it splits the city in two. At Polo Field A, the Stanbic Music Festival opens its gates at 12:30 and runs to 23:30, with Jason Derulo headlining the bill this newspaper has tracked since September — the biggest international booking of the Zambian season. Across town at the Showgrounds, the Diplomatic Fun Fair brings its thirty countries' stalls, food and flags to the same Saturday — the rare day when a family can do diplomacy at lunch and Derulo at dusk.
A practical note for the diary: the city is rearranging itself around the crowds. The Lusaka City Council says street vending will not be permitted from Saturday, and bus drivers operating in unauthorised areas are being moved on — plan the route to the Showgrounds accordingly, and expect the usual Saturday arteries to be policed rather than merely clogged.
The rest of the month is where the season's depth shows. The Stanbic franchise continues online with its virtual 1-2-1 edition — two Zambian artists on one stage for three Fridays through October. In Chingola, the National Theatre Arts Association of Zambia marks forty years of Zambian theatre with a week of stage plays, poetry and monologues at the Chingola Arts Society from 19 to 24 October. The Barefeet Festival turns twenty this month, two decades of transforming children's lives through the arts. And on the weekend of 16 to 18 October, the Lusaka July's tenth edition — "The Tale of a Ruby" — opens at the National Museum, as this newspaper reported on Thursday. October in Lusaka, in other words, is not a month; it is a season ticket. It starts tomorrow at half past twelve.
