Red Arrows went to Durban on Friday 23 October to protect a one-goal lead and came home having made history the hard way. Kaizer Chiefs won the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie 1–0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, levelling the aggregate at 1–1 after Arrows' 1–0 win in Ndola a week earlier, and the Zambia Air Force side won the penalty shoot-out 3–2 to reach the competition's group stage for the first time, as CAF's own match report, South Africa's FARPost and TimesLIVE and Zambia's News Diggers all record.
For an hour the tie went as Arrows would have planned it. CAF reports that Thulani Mabaso forced a save from the Arrows goalkeeper in the 11th minute, that Pule Mmodi headed wide at the far post and that Wandile Duba broke through but could not finish, while News Diggers notes that Eliya Mandanji had the visitors' best early chance in the 8th minute, saved by Brandon Petersen, with Ackim Mumba troubling the Chiefs defence. Chiefs' head coach Fernando da Cruz had made five changes from the first leg, FARPost reports, including Bruce Bvuma in goal, and had lost Renaldo Leaner to an injury in the final training session.
Cross heads Chiefs level, and then the shoot-out
The goal came from a set piece. Mfundo Vilakazi, introduced shortly before the hour, delivered a free-kick and Bradley Cross rose to head it in — CAF gives the time as the 65th minute, FARPost as the 66th. Chiefs then pressed for the second goal that would have taken them through, with substitutes Mduduzi Shabalala and Ethan Chislett at the heart of their best moments; Shabalala's shot went straight at the goalkeeper and Velebayi, set up by Chislett, lifted his over the bar. Arrows, who brought on Ricky Banda and Norris Kalamba to hold their shape, defended in numbers and looked for the counter.
The shoot-out was decided by Chiefs' misses. TimesLIVE reports that Lebohang Maboe, Reeve Frosler and Chislett all failed to convert, leaving Arrows winners at 3–2. None of the reports read for this edition lists the Zambian takers kick by kick. The result ends Chiefs' continental season at the first hurdle, a year after they reached the group stage, and sends Arrows into the 16-club group phase of the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, which CAF says begins in November; the draw date had not been published in the reports consulted.
We are not here to defend, we are here to complete the job.
— Kalililo Kakonje, Red Arrows assistant coach, at the pre-match press conference in Durban on the eve of the match, as reported by News Diggers
The attacking promise was not quite kept on the night, but the job was completed. Alassane Diarra's goal in Ndola, the first-leg winner, turned out to be enough to take Arrows to penalties, and the goalkeeper's work and three Chiefs misses did the rest. Lusaka Brief's preview of the tie on Friday said a Confederation Cup group place was at stake; it is now in Arrows' hands.
