The festival economy does not sleep the week of the show. With four days to Saturday's Stanbic Music Festival at Polo Field A, the bank's own channels were still announcing new partners this week — SES Unisure and Digital Events joining as silver sponsors — while the ticket tiers told their own story: Golden Circle gone, VIP at K2,500 and standard at K800 still moving through Tessera and Computicket. Gates run 12:30 to 23:30 CAT, and Jason Derulo, who sent Lusaka a personal video message when the booking was announced, headlines a bill built, as this festival always is, with Zambia's own artists and DJs underneath the star.
Derulo is the largest pop booking the festival has landed — 250 million singles sold across a catalogue that runs from "Whatcha Say" to "Savage Love" — and his fee is only the visible line in the budget. Around him is the machinery the city's live-music season has been building all quarter: staging and sound crews, security firms, vendors, transport operators, and the sponsor economy of banks, insurers and events companies that has returned to Zambian music after years away. The Kwacha Music Awards, set for 27 November, give the season its other fixed point; the stretch between Saturday and that ceremony is now the busiest concert calendar the capital has ever run.
It has been a heavy news week in Zambia — the heaviest of the year, some would say. The promoters are betting that by Saturday evening the city will want what a polo field at full volume offers: a few hours where the only developing story is a setlist. Judging by the Golden Circle, they are right.
