The announcement landed the way these announcements now land — a video message from the artist, a date, and a scramble. Jason Derulo headlines the Stanbic Music Festival this Saturday, 3 October, at Polo Field A on the Lusaka Showgrounds, in what the organisers are billing as a one-night-only performance. By the weekend, the festival's own channels were reporting Golden Circle tickets sold out; VIP (K2,500) and standard (K800) tickets remained on sale through Tessera and Computicket, with gates running from 12:30 to 23:30 CAT.
The booking is a scale marker for the city's live-music economy. Derulo — 250 million singles sold across a fifteen-year catalogue of "Whatcha Say", "Talk Dirty", "Wiggle", "Want to Want Me" and the TikTok-era "Savage Love" — is the kind of global-pop act Lusaka used to watch fly to Johannesburg and back. The festival around him is deliberately a double bill of worlds: an international headliner on top, a Zambian undercard beneath, in the format Stanbic has built into one of the country's premier entertainment properties. For the local acts on that bill, Saturday is the largest stage most will have played.
It also lands in a season when the capital's cultural calendar is visibly thickening — the Kwacha Music Awards have already confirmed 27 November for this year's ceremony, and the same showgrounds economy of promoters, vendors, riggers and security firms now works a circuit that barely existed a decade ago. The politicians spent the weekend arguing about the state of the nation. On Saturday, the Polo Field will test a different proposition: whether Lusaka, mid-argument with itself, still turns out to sing.
