Zambian club football returns tomorrow with a format the game here has never tried and a kick-off time nobody can miss: all ten opening fixtures of the 2026 Transition Season start at 15:00 on Saturday, 3 October. The headline sends the champions to one of the league's most storied addresses — Power Dynamos, who lifted the trophy in May, open away to Konkola Blades in Chililabombwe, a fixture with decades of Copperbelt weight behind it.
The season's architecture is its own story. The Zambian Premier League has split the clubs into two streams seeded by their final positions in the 2025/26 standings — odd positions in one, even in the other — for a compressed campaign running to January 2027, the bridge that moves the domestic game onto its new calendar. The opening card in full: in the odd stream, Konkola Blades host Power Dynamos, Trident FC welcome Nkana, NAPSA Stars face FC MUZA, Nchanga Rangers meet Zanaco, and newly promoted Makeni All Stars take on Kansanshi Dynamos; in the even stream, Kabwe Warriors host ZESCO United, Mufulira Wanderers welcome Green Eagles, Nkwazi face Roan United, Mutondo Stars meet Red Arrows, and Green Buffaloes play Chirundu United.
There is more silverware in the design than the league table. The season opened with the Charity Shield on 19 September, and the ZPL will run the new Zambia Football Association Challenge Cup alongside the league — a national knockout drawing in ZPL clubs and qualifying teams from the FAZ provincial leagues, giving the lower divisions a televised path into the big grounds. TopStar will carry selected league matches live, and the league has warned that some fixtures may move for broadcast, with changes announced in advance.
What the transition asks of the clubs is stamina of a different kind: a short season with no margin for a slow start, played through the rain months, ending in January with a calendar to catch rather than a trophy alone. For the champions, the defence begins at a ground where they have never been allowed to ease into anything. Fifteen hundred hours, everywhere at once, tomorrow.
