The Transition League begins the way its organisers promised: everywhere at once. All ten of matchday one's fixtures kick off at 15:00 CAT this afternoon, and the pick of them is here on the Copperbelt, where champions Power Dynamos open their title defence away to Konkola Blades at Konkola Stadium — a fixture local television carries live. Power took the sides' most recent league meeting 2–1, in December; Blades have spent the break rebuilding for a season that begins, today, with the hardest visitor of all.

Around the grounds the slate is full, NAPSA Stars hosting FC MUZA among the afternoon's other fixtures. The league's single kick-off time is a small act of theatre and a large act of fairness: every club begins level, every result lands at once, and by 17:00 the first table of the transition season will exist. Yesterday this newspaper set out the fixture list and the stakes; today the ball, at last, does the talking.

The week's bigger football story, though, landed from Germany. Hamburger SV confirmed that Patson Daka suffered a torn muscle fibre in his left thigh on international duty, after detailed MRI scans at the club's Athleticum facility at the Volkspark. "Patson Daka has returned from the Zambian national team with an injury," the Bundesliga club said, adding that he will be sidelined "for the coming weeks" without specifying a period. Earlier German reports had suggested mere muscle tightness; the scan said otherwise. His availability for Hamburg's 10 October meeting with Hoffenheim is doubtful.

The injury's timing is cruel. Daka, 27, joined Hamburg on a free transfer from Leicester City only last month, on a one-year contract with an option for a second, and marked his debut with a goal in a test match. The knock came in Zambia's 3–1 opening 2027 AFCON qualifying defeat away to Algeria; he then missed the 2–0 home win over Togo in Ndola that steadied the campaign. For the Chipolopolo, a convalescing centre-forward is a problem the qualifiers will not wait for — and for Hamburg, an expensive lesson in the international break.

But Saturday belongs to the clubs. Ten grounds, one kick-off, a table that starts level: the Transition League's whole premise is a fresh page. By dusk we will know who read it first.
