The weekend's loudest result came from the league's quietest contenders. Green Eagles went to Shinde Stadium in Kantanshi, Mufulira, on Saturday and dismantled nine-time champions Mufulira Wanderers 4-1 — the highest scoreline of the ten matches across the Transition League's opening week, and enough to put Perry Mutapa's side top of Stream B after one round.

Mutapa's review was equal parts satisfaction and appetite. "I think it was a good fight from the boys. We fought from the first whistle to the last. In the first half we could have scored more goals but it wasn't to be," he said. "In the second half, I think they were good. Congratulations to the boys. It feels nice to score four goals. It is good that our pre-season training has worked. We could have scored more goals." Next is ZESCO United away in Ndola, and the coach is not romantic about it: "Tough match against ZESCO United. It is not going to be easy, especially that we will be away. We have to improve, especially on scoring. Yes, we celebrate the win — but this is just Week One."

The rest of Stream B set its early hierarchy. On Saturday, Kabwe Warriors and ZESCO United shared a 1-1 draw at Railways Stadium, and newly promoted Roan United announced themselves with a 2-1 win at Nkwazi. On Sunday, Red Arrows won 3-1 at Mutondo Stars in Kitwe to take second place, and Green Buffaloes beat Chirundu United 2-1. Wanderers, Nkwazi, Mutondo and Chirundu open with zero points. In Stream A, Sunday's only fixture finished Makeni All Stars 0-0 Kansanshi Dynamos — the newcomers' first point — after Saturday's shocks, led by Konkola Blades' 2-1 defeat of champions Power Dynamos, which this newspaper covered on Monday.

The frame around it all: twenty clubs in two streams, eighteen games each, October to January, with the stream winners meeting in a Championship Playoff Final on 31 January 2027 for the transitional title and a CAF Champions League place. There is no ABSA Cup this season — league positions will decide 2027 qualification. A sprint, then; and the first weekend's sprinting was done by the men in green.
