A lead, an equaliser, a red card, two penalties: Junior Chipolopolo's AFCON dream dies in a 4-2 Maputo classic

For half an hour at ABB Stadium on Friday, Zambia were going to Ghana. Then the semi-final turned into the kind of match that gets replayed for years — and by the end of it, South Africa were through to the COSAFA U20 final and the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, and the Junior Chipolopolo were out of both.

Zambia dominated the first half and led inside the first half-hour through Duncan Musalela, whose strike — already circulating online as the day's golazo — put the Group C winners 1-0 up on the defending champions at the break. The second half detonated. Steven Mendes levelled from the penalty spot just after the hour, and barely two minutes later Oarabile Booysen had turned the tie on its head at 2-1.

Jonathan Kalimina dragged Zambia back to 2-2 in the 76th minute — and undid it almost immediately, drawing the referee's red card in the celebration's aftermath and leaving his side to chase the game with ten men. Six minutes from time Mendes converted his second penalty of the evening, and Emile Witbooi struck late in stoppage time to make the final score 4-2 — a margin that flatters no one and lies about nothing.

So the region's most decorated youth fixture produced another chapter: South Africa, champions in 2024 and winners of the U20 AFCON in Morocco last year, reach a third consecutive final, where they meet hosts Mozambique on Sunday. Mozambique produced the day's other emphatic statement, beating Namibia 3-0 in the late semi. Both finalists are bound for Ghana 2027; Zambia, record twelve-time regional champions and semi-finalists here with a perfect group record, are not.

The consolation, such as it is, lives in the details: a first-half performance that bossed the holders, a second consecutive deep run, and a squad — Billy Daka among the tournament's leading scorers — that will feed the senior rebuild. But a second straight Maputo exit to the same opponent, after the 2-0 defeat in the 2024 final, will sting through the off-season.
